Sherlock Holmes: A LaMothe Movie Review

The Holidays often allow those of us (who can be workaholics) to take time for ourselves without feeling guilty. And one of my personal guilty pleasures is going to the movies. My family and I had the chance to see Sherlock Holmes in late December (after Avatar, which might have been a mistake) and although it was entertaining It really was predictable and somewhat dark. Although Sherlock Holmes is rated PG13 and is 134 minutes long it seems to drag somewhat. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law both did a superior job of keeping the old Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books alive however I say wait for the DVD and save some money by watching it at home.

Synopsis
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous super-sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, gets an update with this adaptation of Lionel Wigram's comic book series by writer/director Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla) starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective, with Jude Law stepping into the shoes of his sidekick, Dr. Watson. AVATAR: A LaMothe Movie Review

If you haven't heard about it or seen it already then you must be in deep hibernation because AVATAR has been the talk of the town for the past few weeks and I suspect that it will be in the cinematic history books as well. PG 13 and 160 minutes long, watching this movie in 3D made me and the 6 others I was with spellbound as James Cameron brings you into a world like no other...his world. Some people have expressed their disdain for the military factor in this movie but I didn't let my mind swim in that political pool...I just enjoyed the new technology that allows a fantasy like AVARAR come to life. My brother, Daniel, who happens to be serving our country in the military, said that AVATAR made Star Wars look like a puppet show...I tend to agree with him!


Synopsis

A paraplegic ex-marine war veteran is sent to establish a human settlement on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet's indigenous Na'vi race in this ambitious digital 3-D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron. The film, which marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's Titanic, will be shot on the proprietary FUSION digital 3-D cameras developed by Cameron in collaboration with Vince Pace, and will offer a groundbreaking mix of live-action dramatic performances and computer-generated effects. Invictus with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon: A LaMothe Movie Review

Having family in for the holidays? Are they into politics? Rugby? Old enough to remember the 1995 World Cup Championship match? Looking for a team to cheer for? Well if that is what you want, Invictus will give it to you.

I really didn't know what to expect when I bought the tickets to see Invictus with my husband last weekend but I certainly didn't expect to "learn" anything...just another sports movie about a team that had already played out history while I was living a very different life. (Where WAS I in 1995? Under a rock? I didn't remember any of this in the news or maybe I wasn't even watching!)

Invictus is awe inspiring, uplifting and has its share of comic relief, however, it isn't for the entire family. Younger children would be bored while teenagers would need to either be studying South Africa and President Mandela or just in love with sports stories. For me, I came away with a new respect for President Mandela and his country and that is worth the price of a ticket!

Synopsis

The Blind Side: A LaMothe Movie Review

I know that with school holidays right around the corner it can be a struggle to come up with ideas to keep everyone entertained...that includes company as well as the kids! I took my family the day after Thanksgiving to the movie The Blind Side. What we were originally planning to see was 2012, which happened to be sold out when we arrived so The Blind Side was chosen only because we wouldn't have to wait more then 30 minutes before it started. Not knowing much about it I was pleasantly surprised at how GREAT it was! What a wonderful feel-good family movie! I have posted the synopsis below but I have to add that this film has something for everyone...sports, drama and family values. It was a "touch down" for everyone in our group. So if you are looking to spend some time at the cinema, I highly recommend The Blind Side!

At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own.
